Lamborghini doors, also known as Lambo, vertical or scissor doors, were originally designed for utility purposes. However, it is the aesthetic that has really stood the test of time.

Scissor doors were initially invented back in 1974 for the Lamborghini Countach, to help with parking and alleviate rear-visibility issues. However, the design has endured through Lamborghini generations because of its iconic look.

Lambo doors symbolize innovation in engineering. This door design is so popular that many car enthusiasts want to convert the doors of their non-Lamborghini cars into scissor doors.

Where there is demand, the market will provide, and it is now possible to convert most car doors into scissor doors.  Installing these doors can be done at home with a kit and the proper tools, or you could have the job done at a body shop.

On average, Lamborghini Doors Cost $3850. On the low end, a vertical door kit can cost you $200 while a full-service install would cost close to $6,000. However, the cost will vary from one model to another. For example, the Hummer kit will cost more than the Honda Civic kit, for example. Further, generally, the kits that will require more modding will be less expensive.

On the other hand, if you decide to hire a body shop to do the job you will also need to pay for the labor. This should not cost more than $500.

How do Lamborghini doors work?

The engineering behind the Lambo door is not as complex as one might think. A scissor hinge hides behind the fender and is attached to the door.

When the door is opened, the hinge allows the door to open outward enough so that it clears the lock. The hinge then allows the door to rotate vertically, sometimes as far as a 90-degree angle, from its original position.

Are They Worth It?

Pros

There are some great reasons to have Lamborghini doors installed on your vehicle. First, since the doors do not open outwards, you can much more easily fit into tight parking spaces. Further, Lambo doors make the road safer for bicyclists.

It is a fact that many bicyclists are injured when they collide with car doors open in their path. Next, although it is usually not recommended, vertical doors allow you to operate the vehicle with the door open.

Interestingly, this was one of the original reasons that these doors were created. The older Lamborghinis had very poor rearward visibility and vertical doors allowed the driver to poke his head out and look behind him when reversing.

Finally, and no less importantly, Lamborghini doors just look cool. Most people are oblivious to the utility of these doors and they have them installed merely for their aesthetic value.

Cons

There are some problems with Lambo doors that you may want to consider before you have them installed. First, anytime you are altering your car, problems may arise.

Vertical door installation can often be painless for your car, but sometimes modding may be necessary. Once you start modding you must be aware of the dangers to the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Another issue that can arise is the ease of ingress/egress. Some vertical doors may not rise high enough vertically to allow you to exit and enter your vehicle effectively.

Along these same lines, you should consider that if you don’t pay attention, you could potentially open the door without the proper clearance. If you are under a low ceiling, you may scrape your door on it.

Finally, it should be noted that in some instances it may be more difficult for emergency services to get to you through a vertical door in the event of an emergency.

How do you install Lambo Doors?

Installing a vertical door kit is one of the easier body alterations one can make on their automobile. Most kits come with detailed instructions on how to remove the old hinges and replace them with scissor hinges.

The main difficulty in the DIY install is that you will have to remove the fender. More daunting is that often it is necessary to cut and roll the fender.

What you will need:

Generally, for a basic install, A kit should include:

  • Instructions
  • Bolts
  • Washers
  • 2x shocks, pins, and shoulder bolts
  • Left and right hinges

The tools you need will vary, but you will likely need various screwdrivers, sockets wrenches, Allen wrenches, Torx bit, wrenches, etc. Further, you very well may need an air ratchet, grinder, and cutter.

Once you have everything you need, you will essentially follow the instructions. You will have to disconnect your battery, remove the headlights and fenders, remove the old hinges, install the new hinges, and finally, trim and replace the fender.

There are obviously quite a few steps in between, but if you follow the instructions, it is absolutely possible to complete this project in your own garage.

Factors that may increase the difficulty of a DIY install:

If the fender must be altered in any way, and you do not have experience in performing bodywork on a vehicle, it may be worth hiring a professional. Cutting and rolling your fender is a permanent alteration to the car, so it is important to get it right.

Also, the turn signal on the fender may need to be replaced or modified depending on its location. Another frequent issue is the wiring harness connections between the body and the door if there is one.

Because the door extends farther away from the body of the car when it opens vertically, the wiring harness will likely need to be extended.

Finally, there are a few cases where paintwork, welding, or door border modification may be necessary. It is important to be aware of these potential issues before you begin this project because you will need to decide if you have the tools and requisite level of skill to complete the necessary tasks.

What Does It Cost to Install Lambo Doors?

The cost to install vertical doors on your vehicle will vary on several factors. You will have to consider the vehicle on which the door kit will be installed, the quality of the kit, the kit’s universality, and whether you will employ someone to do the job for you.

Car type

The cost of your vertical door kit will depend very much on the type of car you have. In general, if you have a large car, truck, or SUV, the kit will be more expensive because the parts are larger. Similarly, if your car is more expensive or luxurious, you will have to pay more.

While you may pay $1200 to $1300 for a pickup truck or a corvette, you may only need to pay around $250 for a more standard car.

Kit Quality

The quality of the kit you purchase can impact useability and price. It would be worth your time to consider the quality of the individual parts in the kit.

Further, you want to make sure that the kit has understandable instructions and contains the parts you need for the amount of work you want to do. Some kits may assume you are going to be comfortable handling more modification, for example.

Kit universality

You will find that the least expensive kit options also require the most work from the purchaser. For example, for around $200 to $300 you can find some version of a universal vertical door kit for most cars.

These universal kits will fit multiple makes and models of cars, but in the end, they will require you to do much more work to install them and have them function properly.

It is especially important when purchasing a universal kit to gain access to the instructions before you purchase. You will want to see what kind of alterations may be necessary to your vehicle to successfully complete the job.

You might realize that you are not comfortable making such drastic changes, or you may decide that you would rather spend more money to purchase a more customized product.

Auto body Professional

Finally, if you decide to have an auto body shop install the doors for you, you will need to tack the cost of labor onto the cost of the kit. A reputable professional should be able to do the job in a few hours and therefore, regardless of the rates in your area, you should not have to pay over $500 for the labor.

This is not set in stone, however. If, for example, you have a high-end car with very technical door technology, the installation may take longer and thus cost more.

Conclusion

In the end, Lamborghini doors are an inexpensive and easily installed edition to most cars. Assuming you have a standard car and a vertical door kit that does not require modding of your vehicle, even someone with rudimentary mechanic skills can do the installation in their own garage. If you like the look and you have the time and money, even your little Honda can have cool Lambo doors!
